FAQ

What is timelocknote.io?

timelocknote.io allows you to share notes (i.e. messages) that can only be accessed after a date or inactivity period you specify.

Why would I need timelocknote.io?

timelocknote.io can be used as an easy way to share information with loved ones in case of an unexpected event (death or incapacity). It can be used as a simple way to plan for (digital) inheritance.

timelocknote.io has no ability or intention to replace legal inheritance mechanisms, but can be used as a complementary measure in some cases.

Beside inheritance planning, timelocknote.io can be used for lighter uses cases, for example for making a bet prediction with friends that you only want to reveal after a certain date.

What is the "minimum activation date"?

The minimum activation date allows to specify a date before which the note cannot be read, even by someone who has the note ID and the decryption password.

What is the "inactivity period"?

The inactivity period is the duration since when the note was last marked as active by its author.

Setting an inactivity period on a note will prevent anyone who as the necessary information (note ID and decryption password) from reading it unless the note owner did not mark it as active for the configured amount of time.

Can I set both a minimum activation date and an inactivity period on a note?

Yes, when both a minimum activation date and an inactivity period are configured, both criteria must be satisfied for the note to be accessible.

Note that at least one of a minimum activation date and an inactivity period must be configured.

Why do I need to set two passwords when creating a note?

You need to set both a decryption password and an owner password to create a note:

  • The decryption password allows to decrypt the note when it becomes accessible (e.g. after inactivity period and minimum activation date). The decryption password must be shared together with the node ID with the person who should have access to the note when it it unlocked.
  • The owner password, together with the note ID, allows the note owner to reset its inactivity period counter or to delete it. It must not be shared with anyone.
How are my notes secured?

Your notes are never sent unencrypted to us. We do not want to see the content of your notes and could not even if we wanted to or were forced to.

Before a note is sent to our servers, it is encrypted on your laptop or mobile phone (i.e. client-side encryption) and can only be unencrypted with the decryption password that you configured. The decryption password is also never sent to our servers, which prevents us from ever decrypting and therefore reading the note.

Can I update a note that I created?

Except for resetting the inactivity period counter of a note to prevent it from being read, a note cannot be updated.

If you need to modify a note (change the content of the note or other details like the inactivity period), create a new one. We also recommend to delete the old note.

Can I use images or other media types in my notes?

No, timelocknote.io only supports text notes for the time being.

How do I keep a note active and prevent the inactivity period from beeing reached?

Resetting the inactivity period counter of a note is as simple as pushing a button from the timelocknote.io website. You need the following information though: note ID and owner password.

It is your responsibility to do this frequently enough so the note does not become accessible to whomever your gave the note ID and decrpytion password to. timelocknote.io does not send reminders of any sort.
